Hearing tests are an essential part of your healthcare package and as our experience of the world is always changing, even things like our sight and hearing can change over time. It can be hard to pinpoint any change in the way you process sound because it often happens quite gradually.
If you frequently find you cannot follow what is being said, have trouble distinguishing individual sounds in a noisy environment or often have to ask people to repeat themselves, these are all signs that it might be time to book a hearing test. Better yet, why not book a regular test and take the guesswork out of it?
Why do people avoid hearing tests?
The reason why some people put off booking a hearing test is that they are concerned about the experience itself. You might be used to thinking of healthcare tests as difficult or it might simply be a matter of not knowing what to expect. I can go through everything with you when we meet. In the meantime, let me give you a brief outline to offer some reassurance.
What does a home hearing test involve?
There are several stages to your hearing test and I will bring everything that is required to complete it in the comfort of your home.
Firstly, I will set you up with the equipment and make sure that you are comfortable. Next, I’ll ask you to listen for a number of different sounds and indicate to me that you have heard them. These will be at different volumes and pitches. The way you process sound has many levels and we want to cover all of these together to pinpoint exactly where there are any areas of difficulty.
All of the above will be painless and easy. You get clear instructions every step of the way and there is no right or wrong answer – it’s not that kind of test! Sometimes you won’t be able to hear any sound and that’s perfectly normal. It doesn’t mean there is anything wrong, just that we have found the limits of your range.
Afterward, I will go through your results with you, so you understand the implications of anything that we need to take a closer look at. I will be able to give you information about the type of hearing loss you are experiencing, if any, and proceed to go through your options from there. I can also suggest hearing equipment support if the test results indicate that it would enhance your hearing experience.
